5 Ways to Thrive in Your Aromatherapy Wellness Journey

The phrase “wellness journey” gets thrown around a lot these days. It can mean a lot of different things to different people, depending on what you’re doing (i.e. yoga, diet, exercise) to improve and maintain your health and wellbeing.

In terms of aromatherapy, and specifically holistic aromatherapy practiced in the English-speaking world, we speak of using naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants (mostly essential oils) to balance , harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit.  Moving along a path of wellbeing is about taking into consideration your whole self, which means not simply looking at the symptoms of an illness you may have, but evaluating the cause as well.

“Aromatherapy is about the development of wellbeing and enjoyment of life in a system of self-responsibility”

~ Salvatore Battaglia, author and aromatherapist

Let’s begin by asking a few questions: are you the person who sees the glass half empty or do you see it half full? Are you more likely to make the dinner reservations or do you let someone else choose for you? Do you prefer to make your own food, or do you buy ready-made meals and/or order from DoorDash? Do you follow a recipe, or do you wing it?

Depending on how you answered the above questions informs how you approach life. Mind you, there’s no black or white answer because on any given day, depending on the challenges life throws your way, we can say yes to either.

It’s a Mindset

Having a successful aromatherapy journey is about having an “active” outlook on life. What do I mean by that? It means feeling empowered to make your own decisions based on being curious about the world around you, building knowledge so you really understand, and taking action with confidence and joy.

Every single day the world is going to throw information and products at you to passively take in and consume. I encourage you to feel free - and engaged - in your aromatherapy journey. Because each person’s journey is unique and we need to start trusting that we are capable of helping ourselves.

Here are 5 simple ways you can thrive in your aromatherapy journey.

  1. TRUST YOURSELF - with knowledge comes understanding and with understanding comes clarity. Learn from trustworthy sources and use your instinct to distinguish truth from fiction. Don’t accept that others must always know better - some do, some don’t - we’re all learning all the time. Believe in yourself, especially with aromatherapy, because it will go a long way in making you feel that you have the skill to help yourself.

  2. BE CURIOUS - there’s nothing more exciting than having an “aha” moment. There’s joy in learning something new, seeing a perspective you hadn’t thought of, experiencing an outcome that you never imagined you could feel. Take in as much information as you can - learn about the individual essential oils and where the aromatic plant comes from. Try blending combinations of oils that you think might work, not because a recipe tells you so. Have fun with the process - it’s trial and error - but I guarantee you’ll learn something from it.

  3. BUY SINGLE ESSENTIAL OILS AND NOT BLENDS - knowing what an individual essential oil smells like and what effect that only that oil alone has on your mind, your body and your spirit gives you greater awareness and control. There are so many different kinds of blends that can be created, and that’s the beauty of blending - it’s in the “eye of the beholder” or in this case,  in the hands of the blender. You experience the rewards from your labor, feel the frustration of your mistakes - in either case you are engaged and experiencing a process. You are open to new possibilities.

You see, when you buy a “sleep” blend or a “stress” blend, you are asking someone else to make the decision for you. You are being passive and not active. You don’t really know what went into that blend and if it will work for you. Feel empowered and trust that you can do it.

  4. ENGAGE WITH YOUR SENSE OF SMELL - it’s easy for us to take our sense of smell for granted because we don’t think about it much. As we breathe, we smell. But if you take the time to actively smell the world around you, you’ll have more joy and feel more connected  - especially to nature and to the foods you eat.

Your sense of smell is an integral part of the aromatherapy journey and a vital part of our health and wellbeing. Use your nose every day. By doing so you are making important neural connections between the outside world and your brain. Connections that can help you mentally, physically and spiritually.

  5. BE MINDFUL - we are so distracted by our electronic devices and by social media that often we forget to be present. Make a conscious effort to connect with yourself and stop and take in your surroundings at least 2-3 times per day. And, at the end of every day, take inventory - journaling is helpful. What went well, what could have gone better. What’s weighing on your mind. What can you release. Feeling more, sensing more - it’s all part of the journey.
