3 Great Benefits of Diffusing Essential Oils

We’re living in unprecedented times, which means it’s no wonder that many of us are feeling ever more anxious, stressed, upset, and even depressed these days.

Like a rollercoaster doing loops and dives, our emotions might run from happy to sad, calm to fearful, and angry to disgusted all in one day. The difficult part is that these emotions create physical responses in our body as a result. They leave us worn out, tense and often unable to sleep.

Aromatherapy, and specifically diffusing essential oils, can be a great support in helping us manage and alter the moods and feelings we may feel at any given time. That’s because, through the use of our sense of smell, we’re able to directly influence our emotions.

Our sense of smell has a direct connection to the limbic system, the emotional part of our brain, led by the amygdala. The moment we smell something, we have a response - good or bad, yuk or yum. It’s a visceral response predicated on scent experiences we’ve had all our life. When we smell, we feel. It’s that simple.

Think about a time when you experienced a scent that made you feel so good, you instantly relaxed, your shoulders dropped, and you experienced a sense of calm.

Now think of a time when you smelled something awful, something so unpleasant you wanted to run away, your body tensed up and you experienced a sense of disgust.

Smelling is emotional.

Which is why using Aromatherapy as a means of harnessing your sense of smell for your well-being can be so effective.

Here are 3 wonderful benefits of diffusing essential oils for your well-being:

1. You can affect your mood

Let’s say you're feeling kind of down and uninspired. You’re dragging and can’t seem to find the energy to motivate yourself to do anything. This is when smelling an essential oil (or blend) that sparks positive emotional responses can provide a quick pick-me-up.

More often than not the scents that are the most uplifting are inspired by a scent memory from childhood. The smell fills us with joy and reminiscence of a positive emotional experience, to which the smell is directly tied.

Try this: make a blend of essential oils that you absolutely love to smell. These are oils that you have an immediate emotional connection to. Combine 2-3 of these favorite oils (3 drops each) and add them to your diffuser. Diffuse for 15 minutes at a time to create an uplifting environment for yourself.

Also recommended: sit in a quiet space and diffuse a blend of Bergamot (Citrus bergamia), Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata var genuina) essential oils to help you reduce stress. Diffuse for no more than 15 minutes at a time, ventilating the room afterwards.

2. You can affect your mind

Let’s say you’re feeling overwhelmed and you can’t seem to be able to concentrate. Your mind is racing with all kinds of thoughts, from finances, to work and family commitments, and even political events. This is when diffusing grounding and/or clarifying essential oils can be very beneficial.

Grounding essential oils serve to reign in our thoughts, anchor us, and bring tranquility and comfort to an otherwise racing mind.

Try this: Sit quietly and meditate while diffusing a blend of grounding essential oils like Frankincense (Boswellia carterii), Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) and Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha). Notice your body relax and your mind still.

Clarifying essential oils also benefit the mind, serving to lift the fog, increase focus and improve concentration to an otherwise unsettled mind.

Try this: diffuse a blend of Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis ct camphor), Siberian Fir (Abies sibirica) and Bergamot Mint (Mentha citrata) essential oils during the day while working or doing chores.

3. You can affect your respiratory system

As the days become shorter and cooler, we’re spending more time indoors and more easily falling ill. Which makes diffusing for respiratory issues like colds and flu very beneficial. Many essential oils are able to open the passageways to the lungs and create an antibacterial action, as well as movement, in the body. Creating an action in the body through inhaling essential oils can help you breathe more easily, especially when heavily congested.

Try this: diffuse a blend of Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), Ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphora 1,8 cineole) and Ginger (Zingiber officinale) in the bedroom 1 hour before going to bed (leave the room). Turn off 30 minutes before sleeping.
